Thanks for joining my Patreon! I’m so grateful you’re here.

This page has all the info you need to get going on my Patreon, but if you’re ready to start learning right now, click this:

Before we discuss where to start, I’d like to share my vision for this place.

My Patreon is all about blending creativity and craft. Learning about music theory can help you pass a music theory test but learning how to USE music theory can help with so much more: Jamming with other musicians, writing music, playing better solos, developing your ear, basically playing whatever you want. My goal is to help you understand AND USE these concepts to become a better musician and better guitarist. So, let’s get a few things straight:

  • Musical concepts can NOT be mastered in just one sitting. Learning guitar and music theory takes time and practice. There are no shortcuts: take your time and move along at your own pace. My lessons are designed to be practiced, discussed, paused, replayed, and most importantly: experimented with! Check out my Community Challenges to practice experimenting with concepts you learn.

  • There is no such thing as a “dumb” question. If you have a question, ask me during Office Hours or post on the Patreon Community Forum. I always find it valuable to respond to a question. (more info below)

  • Some lessons here are to help you learn about a musical concept, other lessons are designed to help you get comfortable using a musical concept. These lessons have homework. DO THE HOMEWORK and submit it on the Patreon Community. You’ll be glad you did.

My weekly Office Hours is just for your questions:

Stop by and ask me anything in the live chat, in the comments below the Office Hours post, or on the Community Forum Office Hours thread.

Now - here’s where to start:

These four series are the foundation of my approach. The first two series are foundational music theory concepts and the last two are foundational for understanding the layout of the fingerboard:

  1. Music Theory for Guitar I - this covers the basics, gives homework, and helps create a strong music theory foundation. I’m continuing to record and post lessons in this series so look out for more.

  2. Music Theory for Guitar II - this series covers these important concepts: chords in a major key, chords in a minor key, harmonic and melodic minor, and secondary dominants.

  3. CAGED Basics I - this series helps you dig into how the CAGED System works with triads all over the fingerboard

  4. CAGED Basics II - this series combines major triads with their relative minor triads, then overlays pentatonic scales, giving a strong foundation for finding chords and scales all over the fingerboard

About myPatreon Lesson Archive:

These foundational series (and every other lesson I produce) can be found on the ‘Patreon Lesson Archive,’ located on my website (not to be confused with your personal Patreon Dashboard found on your phone app or desktop browser).

The Patreon Lesson Archive I’ve designed is separate from the Patreon website and lives on my website. It is a searchable archive of every lesson I’ve posted on Patreon, organized by category, designed to make it easier to navigate all of my lessons.

Patreon Community Forum:

Every Patron who joins my community will be automatically signed up for my community its forum. The community forum is a separate space from Patreon where members can:

  • Start discussions about various topics

  • Upload homework assignments (with visuals and audio)

  • Ask questions, and engage in general guitar/music theory discussions with other members

Need help signing up? Watch the video below, or visit here.

From there, I recommend treating the Patreon like a map and pick a place you want to hang out for a while! Whether it’s a few lessons about songwriting, soloing over specific chord progressions, or something else, just have fun, follow your interests, and enjoy learning how to make music on your guitar.
